We are proud to be one of several Archdiocese of Seattle schools using the Second Step Elementary and Middle School Digital Programs. The Second Step curriculum teaches students the human skills they need to thrive in school and beyond. These skills include problem-solving, communication, executive functions, resilience, growth mindset, and empathy--the building blocks students need to achieve goals, overcome obstacles, and form meaningful relationships. We also teach the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit, which educates both students and staff about recognizing, reporting, and responding to bullying.
(Fun fact: The school featured in this video is St. Luke up in Shoreline!)
Who teaches Second Step?
Our classroom teachers! Research shows that Second Step is most effective when taught this way.
What are the lessons like?
Teachers deliver one 15-20 minute Second Step lesson each week. The lessons are engaging, interactive, and designed specifically for the developmental needs of each grade.
For more samples, see the Second Step website for parents (make sure you're looking at the Digital Programs).
How does Second Step align with our Catholic school values?
You chose St. Francis because you trust that we will nurture your child's spiritual roots with care--that's a profound gift! We embrace the Second Step curricula because it contributes to our mission of educating the whole person in a Christ-centered environment. Second Step adds to but does not replace our Religion classes or the many ways teachers weave Catholic faith into the school day.
