Curriculum

For Reading we will:
  • Read a selection of stories from Impact 50 Short Stories
  • Read various Novel Sets with a specific study guide including vocabulary, comprehension, literary devices and elements
  • Use other instructional platforms including Nearpod and Newsela
 
Common Core Reading Standards will primarily focus on:
  • Citing explicit and inferential textual evidence to support analyzing and interpreting text
  • Determining a theme or central idea of a text and providing an objective summary of the text
  • Analyzing how literary elements and literary devices within a text help shape the development of a story
  • Determine the meaning of words and phrases as they are used in a text, including figurative, connotative, and technical meanings
 
For Writing we will:
  • Use Daily Language Review (DLR) for grammar instruction
  • Focus on descriptive, narrative, expository, persuasive, and poetry
  • Engage in classroom debates with given prompts
  • Write in response to literature 
 
Common Core Writing Standards will primarily focus on:
  • Writing arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence
  • Writing informative/explanatory texts to examine a topic and convey ideas, concepts, and information through the selection, organization, and analysis of relevant content
  • Writing narratives to develop real or imagined experiences or events using effective technique, relevant descriptive details, and well-structured event sequences.
  • Drawing evidence from literary or informational texts to support analysis, reflection, and research.
 

Our students as St Francis will be using Big Ideas curriculum, which is based on the Common Core Standards. Students will have access to Big Ideas Math both online and in hard copy as well as other online tools such as IXL and other online proficiency tools.

 

The 7th Grade Common Core Standards we will focus on this year include the following:

 

The Number System

  • Apply and extend previous understandings of operations with fractions to add, subtract, multiply, and divide rational numbers.

Expressions and Equations

  • Use properties of operations to generate equivalent expressions.
  • Solve real-life and mathematical problems using numerical and algebraic expressions and equations.

Ratios and Proportional Relationships

  • Analyze proportional relationships and use them to solve real-world and mathematical problems.

Geometry

  • Draw, construct and describe geometrical figures and describe the relationships between them.
  • Solve real-life and mathematical problems involving angle measure, area, surface area, and volume.

Statistics and Probability

  • Use random sampling to draw inferences about a population.
  • Draw informal comparative inferences about two populations.
  • Investigate chance processes and develop, use, and evaluate probability models.
