Description
This year your child will be part of a classroom of missionary disciples who will go forth as living signs of Godโ€™s love and compassion to the world. Rooted in our rich Catholic faith tradition and inspired by Pope Francisโ€™ invitation to build a culture of encounter, the Missionary Discipleship Institute (MDI) religion curriculum has been developed specifically for seventh graders in this archdiocese by the Office for Catholic Schools, the Missions Office, and Maryknoll Mission Education. You will accompany your student on this year-long class exploration of what it means to be a Catholic in and for the world, integrating faith, global awareness, and authentic living of Catholic Social Teaching.

Gather with your family about 15 minutes in advance of dinner time on the chosen day you decided upon to help with dinner or a family meal. As said previously, this could be today, or any day from today through Sunday that works best for your family (or those you are living with right now). Set out your placemats as you set the table. Ask if everyone can put away their phones for this conversation, so everyone can be very present to each other. Give your parents the final blessing for the end of the conversation/meal. It is attached below. If you were in class this week, you received a print-out. If you were online, if you can print it out to give to the adults you are dining with, that is great. If you can't print it out, have it open on a tab on your device ready to be used after the meal.
ย Before you sit down to dinner, show those gathered with you for dinner the attached opening prayer and challenge video from Pope Francis.
ย Next, together with your family watch the attached video from Ms. Dixon, the Superintendent of Schools for the Seattle Archdiocese.
Sit down to dinner and pray the attached prayer for dinner and during the meal, have the MDI table conversation with your family. Guidelines for this conversation are also attached below. You received printouts of both of these if you were in person in the class.ย  If you were not in person, please print them out at home.ย  Put them by your placemat.ย 
At the end of dinner, watch the attached final thank you and blessing from Bishop Elizondo (2 min)
Almost, but not quite done yet. Finish by standing and receiving the final blessing from your family if you are having this conversation over dinner, or from the adult on the phone/video conferencing if you are able! Be proud and grateful for what you have accomplished this year by participating in the Missionary Discipleship Institute.

Racial prejudice and its effects in our society have been in the news frequently over the past several years and especially again recently.

Find one or more online images that tell our national "story" (the assumptions being made and taught through movies, TV shows, news reports, and more) about people of different races in the media. Select one of the images you find and add it to the Jamboard attached to this assignment.

If you would find it helpful, have a look at the "I Spy Racial Prejudice" slide for an example of a Jamboard on the issue. Of course our class Jamboard will have about a dozen images, so you may have to shrink the image you add to the Jamboard so that everyone's image fits.
