This year your child will be part of a classroom of missionary disciples who will go forth as living signs of God’s love and compassion to the world. Rooted in our rich Catholic faith tradition and inspired by Pope Francis’ invitation to build a culture of encounter, the Missionary Discipleship Institute (MDI) religion curriculum has been developed specifically for seventh graders in this archdiocese by the Office for Catholic Schools, the Missions Office, and Maryknoll Mission Education. You will accompany your student on this year-long class exploration of what it means to be a Catholic in and for the world, integrating faith, global awareness, and authentic living of Catholic Social Teaching.

Here's the information (in bold) you need to write under the flaps for each interactive:
Saint Paul
Persecuting Christians:  Was originally named Saul.  Before conversion, he hated Christians and tortured and harassed them.  He helped stone St. Stephen.
Meets Jesus:  On his way to Damascus to continue persecuting Christians, he saw a bright light that said, "Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting me?"  This was Jesus giving Paul the gift of faith.
Missionary Work:  He was baptized and his name was changed to Paul.  He traveled widely preaching the Good News and led many to Jesus.
Martyr:  His enemies tried many times to kill him but they could not stop him.  When he was old and tired, he was imprisoned and sentenced to death.

Saint Peter
Time of Jesus:  He was the first pope.  Jesus had said Peter would be a fisher of men when they first met.  Peter was one of the first followers of Jesus.

First public miracle . . .:  After Jesus died and Peter received the Holy Spirit, Peter and John performed their first miracle by healing a crippled beggar.  They said, "In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, walk!"  He was then healed.
Martyr:  Peter was taken prisoner and asked to be crucified like Jesus for denying Him and asked for his head to be down because he wasn't worthy to die like Jesus.

Nero
Nero's Early Life:  Came from imperial background.  His line traces to Caligula and Claudius.

🟠 What does it mean to be a missionary? How is that different from being just a volunteer? in Google Classroom

🟠 What does it mean to be a missionary? How is that different from being just a volunteer?

Read through and reflect on the following paragraph written by Michael Leen, a Maryknoll lay missionary:

I sat across from Bernard, executive director of a non-governmental organization helping the needy in Mwanza, Tanzania, where I serve with Maryknoll Lay Missioners. I teach entrepreneurship and help young mothers establish group enterprises to attain economic independence and escape poverty. Bernard and I were talking about a volunteer from Europe who might be coming to join us, and I asked what role this volunteer might fulfill. After explaining the potential responsibilities, Bernard looked me right in the eye and said: “Michael, you are not like other volunteers who come here because you’re a missioner. You don’t simply come to observe, or do your day job and return home. You get involved in the lives of others. You become part of the community. You make a difference.”

Next, think about the quotes from the pope that we studied today in class and the scripture passages you read and discussed in small groups.  If you want to review any of these passages again, look them up in your Bible.  The passages are as follows:
Mark 14:13-21
Luke 10:1-9
Acts 2:1-13
Acts 2:42-47
Acts 3:1-10
You are encouraged to discuss the quote from Michael Leen, the quotes from the pope, and these scripture passages with your parents.
