Pompeii the City: A major resort during Ancient Roman times. The rich had summer homes there.
Natural Disasters: The area experienced frequent earthquakes. Mt. Vesuvius erupted and buried Pompeii under ash and debris.
Archaeological Treasure: Fragments of frescoed walls, sculptures, silver spoons, furnishings, amulets, and items from everyday life before the city was destroyed have been recovered and put on display in a museum.
The Fall of Jerusalem
First . . .: The Jews rebelled against their Roman masters.
Next . . . : Emperor Nero sent an army under Vespasian to restore order. By the year 68, resistance in the north had been wiped out and the Romans focused on subjugating Jerusalem.
Then . . .: Nero killed himself and Vespasian declared himself emperor until he died. It was left to Titus to lead the assault on Jerusalem.
After that . . . : Roman legions surrounded the city, broke through Jerusalem's outer walls and ransacked it They burned and destroyed the Temple that served as the center of Judaism.
Finally . . .: The Romans killed thousands of Jews. Those not killed were enslaved and sent to work in Egyptian mines. Others were sent to arenas where they were killed in front of audiences. Relics from the Temple were taken to Rome and displayed to celebrate victory.
Titus
Before Emperor: Titus was the elder son of Vespasian. Titus was brought up in the court of Emperor Claudius as a companion to the emperor's son Britannicus. He had a successful military career.
While Emperor, Disasters Strike!: Two months into Titus' reign, Vesuvius erupted after a serious fire and plague in Rome. Some thought all this happened as punishment for destroying the Temple in Jerusalem.
Not only disasters for Titus . . .: The Flavian Amphitheatre, better known as the Colosseum, opened. Titus finished the building work which had begun under his father. He inaugurated it with a series of lavish games and spectacles.
